If you have a normal or “neutral” foot position, you will have a slight arch (not too high and not too low) your feet will point straight ahead and the back of the heel bone will form a straight line perpendicular to the ground.

What do abnormal foot types look like?

Abnormal foot structure is extremely common in the population. It is manifested as either an excessively flat foot or an excessively high arched foot type. This foot type is inherited from your parents so if either one of your parents has flat or high arched feet, chances are yours will be the same. Why are flat and high arched feet a problem?

When you play netball your feet must go through specific movements and ranges of motion. If you have excessively flat or high arched feet, this can reduce your foots ability to absorb shock and adapt to the ground. As a result you increase the risk of sustaining both acute and overuse injuries to your feet, ankles, knees, hips and lower back. Some of these injuries include:

  1. Plantar fasciitis (heel spurs)
  2. Shin splints
  3. Patello-femoral pain syndrome
  4. Ankle sprains
  5. Achilles tendinopathy

What to do about your foot structure?

If you play netball, having a flat or high arched foot type can significantly increase your risk of sustaining an injury. The key is to prevent injury before it’s occurred so you can remain active and pain free on your feet. The only way you can do that if you have an abnormal foot structure is to correct the position of your feet. This can be achieved through the use of custom orthotics which are specialized insoles that sit into your shoes. These orthotics correct your abnormal foot position which reduces the stress and strain placed on the soft tissue structures in your foot.
